  18. <p>     Nearly five years after the event, the legal wrangling
  19. continues over audiotapes of the space shuttle Challenger's
  20. final moments. Several news organizations (including TIME) sued
  21. NASA under the Freedom of Information Act to disclose certain
  22. aspects of its investigation into the accident. Most eventually
  23. withdrew their actions, but the New York Times has continued
  24. to petition for tapes to back up a NASA transcript of cabin
  25. conversation. In the official version, the final comment is
  26. pilot Michael Smith's "uh-oh," indicating he might have been
  27. aware of impending danger. A federal appeals court agreed with
  28. NASA that releasing the voice material would constitute an
  29. invasion of privacy. George Freeman, a Times lawyer, says the
  30. paper has not decided if it will appeal. But a NASA
  31. investigator has confirmed suspicions that the astronauts were
  32. conscious of their fate, and that among the last words from the
  33. craft were those of one astronaut saying to another, "Give me
  34. your hand."
